KOH RONG ….IS… SO KOH RIGHT!

Cambodia is more than Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. Koh Rong (also referred to as Kos Rong and Kaôh Rong) is Cambodia’s second-largest island. Located in the Gulf of Thailand, around 25km off the coast of Sihanoukville, the island is a part of the Sihanoukville Province. The island is connected with Sihanoukville via a ferry service. The trip usually takes around an hour each way.  However, a few resorts have their own private speedboat service, making the trips a lot more comfortable and faster.

Covering an area of around 78 km², three-quarters of Koh Rong’s coastline are beaches and there are over two dozen beaches! Not all of them have been developed for tourism.  Saying that, the island is more than just sandy beaches and coral reefs. The terrain on Koh Rong is hilly. There is dense jungle terrain, coconut plantations, waterfalls, capes and sandstone rock formations to admire inland. The island is an excellent place for snorkelling and scuba diving, as the area is renowned for its stunning underwater panorama. Kayaking and paddle boarding are 2 very popular activities above water. The island’s interior offers hiking, trekking and mountain biking. The best time to visit Koh Rong is from the middle of November to February when the daytime temperatures are 25°C, and the climate is wet and dry. Similar to Thailand, it gets a lot hotter (but still dry), with the wet season starting around June.

Tour East Cambodia feature Koh Rong, as a stand-alone beach stay or as a relaxing wind-down destination at the end of a round-trip. One of these trips – the “14 days 13 Nights Cambodia Highlights Program (available in Superior, Deluxe and Luxury Class”) does precisely that!  We don’t want to provide too many spoilers here but feel that we should mention that there will be a stop in Kep Province, an area known for its pepper and salt farming. A visit to the Starling Pepper Farm introduces the visitor to the aromatic Kampot pepper. The pepper production has been in a resurgence after top chefs around the world have rediscovered the uniqueness of the Kampot Pepper. And since pepper is nothing without salt – at least on western dining tables – visitors will visit Kampot’s famous salt fields. Relaxing days then await on nearby Koh Rong!
