WHY SURF IN THE MALDIVES?
Why surf the Maldives? A better question is why wouldn’t you surf the Maldives? It’s absolutely stunning, with white sandy beaches, picturesque palm trees, clear aqua blue water and beautiful coral reefs. Add to that, the option to surf some world class uncrowded breaks or dive crystal clear waters and see rare fish swimming around perfect coral. All this and you have yourself a holiday destination that dreams are made of.
With no land mass between the islands, the storms known as ‘The Roaring 40’s’ (Antartica’s storms) create huge amounts of wave energy that generates tremendously large wavelengths that over the vast distance organise themselves into waves which break over deep ocean water and the islands steep reef drops. This produces fast and hollow waves, tube city (yeew), this all happens in seamable never-ending channel passes. The great thing about this unique part of the world is there are many many beaks yet to be discovered, letting you unleash the Christopher Columbus in you and explore, creating your own adventure. Known as a honeymooners retreat and unknown for the vast amount of surf, dive, water sports and surfing, the Maldives is still widely untouched and unknown.
The Maldives possess year-round swell. The Malé Atolls are split into two, North and South, with the South being known as Kaafu. Both North and South Atolls have an abundance of left and right surf-able waves. Which boasts internationally known breaks such as Cokes, Sultans, Ninjas, Jailbreaks and many more. These waves can range from 2-8 feet and are best surfed in the Spring/Summer although it is hardly ever flat, so there is always something to surf. Located in the North Malé Atoll is Male, the capital city. This is where your shopping and dining needs are met, being heavily urbanised, and the most built up area. It provides that western convenience harmonised with the idyllic sun, sand and sea holiday many long for. Although the North Malé Atoll could boast the best waves in the Maldives. Due to hosting the most popular spots, this also brings the crowds. South Malé Atoll hosts Hulhumale airport and the surf spots are incredibly less crowded. Kaafu is easy to get around with Ocean asia providing numerous guided tours. With all the resorts, guest houses, hotels, surf and dive operators, Kaafu is a great place to visit. It is so spread out you can have your own adventure just by hoping from island to island. Ocean Asia have been surfing and exploring the Maldives for the past 10 years. The Southern and Central Atolls have been increasing its popularity among surfers due to the fact it is a lot less crowded than the Malé Atolls and still delivers world class surf.
