SOUTH MALE ATOLL
The South Male Atoll is the smaller neighbour of the busier, more developed North Male Atoll. It is separated by a deep channel (Vaadhu Kandu), contains 22 islands and is oblong in shape. South Male is popular among divers, due to excellent conditions and a variety of dive sites. Journey time is typically 45 minutes by speedboat from the airport at Male.
NORTH MALE ATOLL
The North Male Atoll is an expanse of islands, stretching more than 32 miles. Of the 50 islands, only 8 are currently inhabited. This atoll is famed for surfers with the Maldives’ most famous surf break called ‘Cokes’, which is located close to the island of Thulusdhoo. In the capital Male, you will find the golden-domed Friday Mosque and plenty of local life. With many attractions and island resorts, it is clear to see why the North Male Atoll is the most popular tourist hub in the Maldives.
RAA ATOLL
The Raa Atoll is regarded as one of the biggest atolls in the Maldives, and consists of more than 90 islands dotted around to the north of Male. Despite being larger in scale, the Raa Atoll is actually one of the most undeveloped atolls within the Maldives, and very few islands are inhabited. Maybe this will change in the future!
